Clink!

Now some may find this a very small thing, but last night was a glorious night for me. Christian's handwriting has made a turn for the better! Up until this point his handwriting has been very close to illegible, much to the chagrin of his teacher whose goal this year to have all of her students have good handwriting. Christian never cared how he held his pencil, never pressed carefully, it was a matter of getting the assignment done and maybe not even that. It has been a struggle of his over the years. His fine motor skills are not great, and I think his hand writing is a bit hereditary if you have ever seen mine. Now it is not perfect, but look at this pencil hold...

And look at the words. What...you don't see it? The letters sit on the baseline, they are not floating in the air. They have the right shape, and trust me on this, were formed slowly and mostly correctly. This is nothing short of a miracle.

I am a great mother...and didn't hold back my dumbfounded amazement at the neatness of his handwriting. He smiled and giggled. When he was finished I held him on my lap and asked how this came about. Did his teacher say something that helped him? No. Did I say something? No. (Trust me, we have been working hard saying all sorts of things) Well, what did it then?

"Well, one night dad told Katie to slow down while she was writing so that her handwriting would be neater... (Pause) and I thought that if it would help her, then maybe it would help me to have neater handwriting." Hallelujah, something clicked. It is like hearing the metal clink into place inside the brain. When it clicks it clicks. You can try to hurry it all you want, but it happens on its own time.
